New Washburn Acoustic Electric GuitaR
Features of the Washburn D10SCE R Deluxe Electro-Acoustic
Tuners - The gold sealed tuners have large modern-style knobs and tuned the instrument smoothly.
Headstock - The Washburn headstock is a slightly elongated paddle-shape with a notched top. It gives some extra space between the machine-heads which makes tuning a less fiddly job and is visually very well balanced. The headstock is faced in rosewood veneer and has a Washburn logo in gold.
Nut - The nut is actually one half of the Buzz Feiten tuning system used on many Washburn guitars. You may be familiar with compensated bridges that allow the bass strings to be progressively longer than the treble strings. The Buzz Feiten system applies this theory to the nut as well as the bridge. Essentially the nut abuts the end of the fretboard as normal but the construction of the nut creates a "shelf" which decreases the length of each string according to the Feiten formula.
Neck - The mahogany neck has a slim and comfortable profile with a buffed satin finish that feels smooth under the hand and allows the grain of the neck to show through. The fully adjustable trussrod is accessible through the soundhole at the body end.
Fretboard - The mid-brown rosewood fretboard has a tight grain and carries traditional dot-markers inlaid in pearloid. The fretboard is bound in what looks very much like maple.
Frets - The thin-profile are well-finished and lightly polished.
Action - The action from the box is good, giving the best balance between easy playability and unrestricted string vibration.
Body - The Washburn D10SCE-R is a Dreadnought guitar with a single cutaway for better access to higher frets. The back and sides are rosewood and finished in a high gloss which allows the lovely grain of the final veneer to show through. The top is solid spruce and both front and back are bound with that maple-like binding with an addition of a triple pinstripe on the top-binding. The centre of the back is adorned by a multi-laminate decorative binding that uses at least three different woods to produce a line of small cube-shapes down the back of the guitar. The soundhole rosette is made up of three concentric circles, the centre one being inlaid in abalone that has a lovely rainbow colouring.
Bridge - The bridge is a modernist rectangle shape made from rosewood. The saddle is a Buzz Feiten design that compliments the previously decribed nut. Normal saddles are generally compensated at the second string and this is also the case with the Buzz Feiten saddle. But here the concept is enlarged and if you study the saddle closely you can see that there's a progressive compensation across the lower four strings. Traditional bridge pins secure the strings.
Pickup - The Washburn is loaded with the Fishman Ion+ pickup and preamp system.
Controls - The control panel sits in the side of the upper bout. There's a rotary volume control and smaller rotary controls for bass and treble. Next to these is a phase reverse button. There's a built-in tuner which is activated by a on/off push switch. This actvates a small circular display on the control panel which shows the note being played. This display has two red lights, one on either side, and one green light above the display. If the note is flat, the left-hand red light illuminates. If it's sharp the right-hand red light illuminates. When the note is in tune the green light illuminates.
Pickguard - The teardrop pickguard is black single-ply.
Strap-buttons - There is a single white plastic strap button affixed to the base of the body.
Output - The output jack is on the lower edge of the body in a large mounting plate which also houses the battery compartment for the preamp.
Finish - This is a nicely finished and very attractive instrument.
Sound of the Washburn D10SCE R Electro-Acoustic
Acoustically, playing without an amplifier, the dreadnought body produces a rich and full tone which is well-balanced across the sonic range with particularly sweet mids and lows. This translated really nicely to a sweet and deep amplified voice. I started out with the tone controls at 12 o'clock and found the underlying sound to be so good I had no need to tweak them. However they have an adequate sweep to iron out your sound if you find yourself playing through a dodgy PA.
Overall Impressions of the Washburn D10SCE R ROSEWOOD Electro-Acoustic
The grain of the tonewoods used, the luxury bindings and the beautifulrosette are all cream on an already tasty cake. It's not surprising that the Washburn D10SCE-R is one of the top-selling lines of acoustic guitars in the world. The full tone of its Dreadnought body delivers convincingly with or without amplification. At this price it could be one of imuso's best buys.
